Blind Test Report: Three Sheet Mask Fabrics from Three Chinese Suppliers – Only One Passed All Tests

 [This report was published in the August 2026 issue of "Beauty Supply Chain Review," a trade publication for cosmetic industry professionals. The tests were conducted by an independent laboratory in Guangzhou. The suppliers were anonymized to protect their identities but the results are real.]


Introduction

Sheet masks are a $3.2 billion global market. The fabric is the most important component. It determines how much essence the mask holds, how well it releases the essence to the skin, and how comfortable the mask feels.

Three Chinese suppliers dominate the sheet mask fabric market for mid-tier brands: Supplier A (cotton-based), Supplier B (rayon-based), and Supplier C (synthetic blend). All three are large-scale producers. All three supply major international brands.

We designed a blind test to determine which fabric performs best. We purchased 100 masks from each supplier. All masks were identical in size and shape. All were tested at the same independent lab. The lab was not told the supplier names.


Test 1: Fabric Weight and Uniformity

The first test was basic quality. The lab weighed each mask and measured the thickness at five points.

Analysis:

Supplier B had the heaviest fabric (32.1g) and the most consistent thickness. Supplier A was lighter but also consistent. Supplier C was the lightest but had the widest thickness variation—some masks were 40% thinner than others.

Consistency matters for sheet mask quality. A mask that is 40% thinner in one area will not absorb essence evenly. The skin in that area will receive less essence than the rest of the face.

Winner: Supplier B


Test 2: Essence Absorption Rate

The second test measured how quickly each mask absorbed a standard essence solution. The lab applied 25ml of standard test essence to each mask. They measured the time until the mask reached maximum absorption.

Analysis:

Supplier C absorbed the fastest (12 seconds). But it also absorbed the least—only 19.1ml of the 25ml essence. The remaining 5.9ml sat on the surface. In a real mask, this would cause dripping.

Supplier B absorbed more slowly (24 seconds) but held more essence (23.8ml). Almost all of the essence was absorbed into the fabric.

Supplier A was the balance—moderate speed and moderate absorption.

Winner: Supplier B


Test 3: Essence Release Rate

The third test measured how much essence the mask releases to the skin. This is the most important test for a sheet mask. The lab applied the masks to a synthetic skin model. They measured the essence transferred over 20 minutes.

Analysis:

Supplier B released the most essence to the skin (20.1ml) and had the highest release percentage (84%). It also dripped the least.

Supplier C released the least (14.3ml). Despite absorbing 19.1ml, it only released 14.3ml. The remaining 4.8ml of essence was retained in the fabric and never reached the skin.

Winner: Supplier B


Test 4: Skin Feel and Fit Panel

The fourth test was qualitative. The lab recruited 30 volunteers. Each volunteer tested a mask from each supplier. The volunteers rated the masks on fit, adherence, and comfort. They were not told which mask was from which supplier.

  • Best For: Promotional items, price-sensitive markets


What the Test Did Not Measure

This test measured objective performance. It did not measure price, delivery reliability, or certification.

The price difference between the suppliers is significant:

  • Supplier C is 40% cheaper than Supplier A

  • Supplier A is 15% cheaper than Supplier B

On a 100,000-unit order, the difference between Supplier B and Supplier C is approximately $18,000 in fabric cost alone.

However, if the finished mask is expected to retail at $8, the additional $0.18 per mask for Supplier B's fabric may be justified. Consumers who pay premium prices expect premium performance.


Buyer Takeaways

From this test, buyers of sheet mask fabrics should take away four points:

  1. Test the fabric, not just the price. Supplier C was the cheapest by a significant margin. It also performed the worst in every category. The savings are not worth the quality loss.

  2. Release rate matters. A mask can hold a lot of essence. But if it doesn't release the essence to the skin, the holding capacity is wasted. Supplier B had the best release rate. Supplier C held less and released less.

  3. Consistency is quality. Supplier C's thickness variation was 40% across the batch. That means some masks in the same box are different from others. This is a manufacturing control issue.

  4. Blind testing reveals the truth. Supplier B was not the most expensive. It was not the cheapest. It was the best. If we had chosen based on price alone, we would have picked the wrong supplier. The data showed us the correct choice.


Final Recommendation

Based on this blind test, we recommend Supplier B as the best-performing sheet mask fabric supplier among the three tested.

Supplier B's fabric demonstrated consistent thickness, high essence absorption, excellent essence release, and the highest skin feel ratings from testers. The slight price premium is justified by the performance advantage.

Supplier A is a viable alternative for budget-conscious buyers with moderate quality requirements.

Supplier C should be avoided for any mid-tier or premium product line.


The Question We Still Have

We sent these results to all three suppliers. Supplier A accepted the results. Supplier B asked for more data. Supplier C disputed the test methodology.

We offered Supplier C the chance to retest. They declined.

We don't know why.
